She got into her seat and drove us to I-didn’t-know-where-yet. The music was playing softly in the car. I was having difficulty with noises, they were making me irritable but the melody was nice so I was okay. We were getting closer to Avery’s house. At least I hoped we were going to her house, because I was frightened to be alone. I needed her, in more than one way. When she turned to the right, I knew we were going to her place because my house was over on the left. I bit the inside of my cheeks to subdue a smile. A few seconds later, Avery parked the car in her driveway. She undid my safety belt, then hers. She got out of the car to help me out, then grabbed my bag and arm-in-arm we walked to her door.

”Calm down, girl. I’m not dying, I’m okay. I can feel your body trembling.”

”I can’t calm down, Remy.” She unlocked the door and pushed it open. ”I lost Carter, okay? He’s gone,” she cried. ”And I came this close,” she showed me a tiny gap between her fingers, ”this close, to losing you too, and that tore me apart.” She put my bag on the table. ”When Megan told me what happened, I passed out, because I couldn’t believe I was going to have to go through this again. We waited twenty-four hours before we finally got the news that you were alive.”

I felt terrible. ”I’m sorry, girl, I’m so sorry.” I pulled her towards me and wrapped my arm around her. She cried and she sobbed against my t-shirt. Ave was in a terrible mess. ”I promised you I would come back, and I did.” I kissed her hair. ”I’m so sorry I had to come back in such a dramatic way.”

”You’re alive, Remy.” She almost never called me by my first name. ”It’s all that matters.”

”I know, Avery.”

We were silent for a moment, her sobs calming down and she regained control of herself. It broke my heart to see her like this, she’d seemed so strong at the hospital and I was just realizing it was a facade. In that instant, I knew we both needed rest and we both had a lot on our minds.

”I think I need to lay down, Ave, I’m getting a little dizzy. I’ll go to my room.” She squeezed me with all of her strength, one last time, before releasing me.

I got to the guest room. There was a bouquet of daisies on the night table. She’d changed the sheets and comforter on the bed for a navy blue one. I made it to the bed just in time, my vision had gone blurry. I sat on the corner of the bed and closed my eyes. The fact that she wanted me to stay here was great, but damn, this was fucked up. She still continued to ignore everything I’d said to her. It made me anxious and the best thing I could do was lie down and chill out. Being around her was even harder now. I put my arm over my eyes, to hide away from the light in the room. Turning it off required too much physical effort for now.

”Remy, are you okay?” Her voice was low.

”Can you turn the light off, please?”

She did and then removed my shoes. I shifted up on the bed and she placed my legs under the comforter. ”Do you feel any pain?”

”It’s not too bad, I can manage.” My head hurt constantly, no matter what I did. In my shoulder, the bullet had torn a muscle and damaged the bone severely. They had to screw the bone together in three different places. It would never be as strong as it used to be, but at least I was alive.

”Okay…” She stayed in the room looking at me. It had me confused, did she want to talk or something?

”Is everything OK, Ave?” I needed to know.

She nodded. ”It’s just good to have you here. I missed you.”

Okay, she was giving signs she wanted to talk, but I thought maybe she wasn’t ready just yet.

”I missed you too, girl.” I smiled.

She returned my smile with one of her own, she seemed suddenly shy and her cheeks flushed. ”I thought about what you said to me a lot. It scared me at first but then, I felt like I already knew about it. Things cleared up in my mind. How you were always looking after me, always making sure I was okay. I should have known, but I only had eyes for Carter. I still love and miss him every single day.” She took a deep breath and rubbed her eyes. ”But… I felt things were different prior to your deployment and I understand now. I didn’t hate it, I liked it. Being closer to you makes me feel better. I need it, but I can’t promise you more than that.”

”What are you saying, exactly, Avery?” I could feel a wave of tingles rush through my body. What did she mean? It was so out of character for her to be so shy.
”I’m saying I still love Carter, I probably always will, but I also like you and need to be around you. I can’t promise you anything, but we could try and see if it would work out.”

”I’m not a consolation prize, Avery.”

Jennifer’s Review: OMG! 10+ stars! This book blew me away, snatched me back and tied me down to the longest emotional roller coaster I’ve ever been on. And I loved every minute of it!

Brett is an amazing person to have endured so much. At a young age he met and married who he thought was the love of his life, but things changed. After an accident Sarah no longer wanted anything to do with him. And in the process of that accident Sarah lost her best friend.

Brett is still there for her and they’re still married. He knows that even though she no longer wants him he said “for better or for worse, until death do us part” and he believes that. He stays married to her to help her with health insurance because she can’t work. She won’t even leave the apartment.

Brett has just been going through the motions of life. If it wasn’t for his friend Caleb he probably wouldn’t be where he is. They had a falling out for a while, but their friendship held strong in the end.

Life has a way of throwing you for a loop though and that’s when Jesse Addison steps into Brett’s life. She is the complete opposite of Sarah. She’s quiet and shy where Sarah is loud and bossy. Brett thought Sarah was his forever until he got his hands on Jesse and he realized that he’d been living in a fog.

But Sarah has other plans. She may not want Brett, but she sure as hell is going to make his life hell with Jesse since he won’t give her the divorce she had so desperately wanted.

I don’t honestly think I can do justice to Aly’s book with the emotions that it brought out. I laughed, cried, awed, and shouted during different parts and by the time the book ended I had fallen in love with Brett and Jesse. Their story isn’t the typical one, but it was amazing to get to read it through the mind of Aly.

Kevin’s Review: This isn’t my normal genre, or at least it wasn’t before this weekend, but it may have just changed the course of my reading. I met this wonderful author at an event my wife put on, and after reading the synopsis of the book, I decided to give it a shot. I have NEVER read a book in less than 48 hours, until now. I literally could not put this thing down. It was an emotional roller coaster that you just can’t get off of. No matter what I say, I can do no justice to this book in a review. I put a book down that I have waited for over 2 years to come out so I could read this book. Aly Martinez, I HATE you for stealing my weekend away from me.

Jayde and Cash seemed to have drifted apart. She decides to surprise Cash one day and her world crumbles in the aftermath of finding out that Cash has been cheating on her.

Then life seems to throw her for another loop, but her long time friend, Nate, is there to pick up the pieces and be there for her. He has become her everything. She still loves Cash in his own way, but Nate is the one that has been faithful to her and pulled her through the dark times.

Fate isn’t done with her yet and she must face an even bigger disaster. One she’s not sure she can get through.

Be ready with a box of tissues. This book is going to make you cry. It will make you laugh, yes, but this is one of those books that seems to drop a couple bombs and you aren’t expecting them. Definitely a must read!

My black lace dress clung to my soaked body as I sobbed uncontrollably against the old oak tree. With one hand pressed against my heart I squeezed my eyes tightly shut, trying to remember the last thing he had said to me. “I love you, Jayde, with all my heart. Give Sawyer a kiss for me, I’ll be home after the show.” My body continued to heave as my knees gave out and I crumbled to the ground. The sky roared with thunder and lightning; usually I would have been scared shitless to be out in this stuff but right then I didn’t care what happened to me. I just wanted it all to be a horrible dream…and I would wake up with a racing heart but find him beside me in our bed instead of buried in the ground.

“This can’t be real!!” I wailed loudly into my hands, where my head was now resting. I had no energy to lift my body from the ground, not that I wanted to. But if I didn’t get out of the storm I would most likely be sucked up into it. I remembered losing my parents at a very young age but the one thing I did not remember was how badly my heart ached from having someone ripped from your life at the drop of a hat.

Everything was perfect…too perfect. Any time in my life when things seemed to fall together, something had always come along to wreak havoc and remind me that my life would never be perfect. I should have gone to the show; if I was there…I could have stopped it from happening and we would be together…in our home. One big happy family.

“Baby girl…” That voice cut right through me. Was it bad of me to want to allow him to help me? After everything he had done…and after everything I had done? I didn’t even bother to look up; I continued to pour every ounce of emotions I had out through my tears and onto my soaking wet self. “Let me get you out of this storm…You’re going to be sick and Sawyer needs you.” He scooped me up into his arms; the warmth of his skin caused me to gasp. I circled my arms around his neck and rested my head against his shoulder. “I know this sounds cliché and I’m fucking horrible with words…but it’ll get better with time, Jayde. I promise you…” His voice was thick with emotion.

His kindness only caused me to cry even harder. I was a horrible person…I didn’t deserve happiness, and I definitely didn’t deserve him being kind to me right now. I heard the car door open just before he lowered me into the passenger’s seat. When the door shut I finally looked at him through the rain streaked window. His hair was shorter than usual but my heart still fluttered uncontrollably at the sight of him. What the hell is wrong with me? I shouldn’t feel this way, not today… I curled my legs up into the seat with me and wrapped my arms around them tightly. Resting my head against my knees I stared out the front window as the driver’s door shut.

“Is there anywhere you want me to take you?” His voice was just above a whisper. Without moving my eyes from the front window I shook my head no. “Do you want to go home?” Home…Where all the memories were… The thought of walking back into that house caused a horrible sob to rip from my chest. Wasn’t there a limit of tears a person could produce? I buried my face into my knees to ride out the emotional rollercoaster I was on yet again.

“I’m staying at Aria and Bryden’s place while I’m in town. How ‘bout I take you there?” I didn’t respond, after a few long seconds I felt the car shift into gear. He pulled his jacket from the backseat and draped it over me. I hadn’t realized my body was shaking so badly until then. I rolled onto my side facing the door, gripping the jacket tightly around me, and fell into a silent cry, the kind where your body shook aggressively but you didn’t produce any noise. I felt his warm hand touch my arm lightly causing even more goose bumps to run across my skin. “Seeing you like this is killing me right now…” His hand ran up and down my arm briefly before it was gone and the coldness was back.
